“Occasionally, there are minutes that get extra seconds. Moments so precious the universe stretches to make additional room for them, and this was one of them.”
This series felt like one of those moments—like time stopped when I was reading it and I was back in the world of Caraval. Stephanie Garber really stepped things up in Legendary and the stakes get even higher in Finale, in both plot and romance and I was living for all of it. Donatella and Scarlett are dealing with the information they obtained in Legendary and trying to digest new information that is revealed in this novel and none of it is easy.
“He smelled of magic and heartbreak, and something about the combination made her think that despite what he claimed, he wanted to be her hero.”
Where would the Dragna sister be without romantic drama? Tella is torn between Legend and Jacks; Scarlett is drawn to Julian while still wanting the life she dreamt of with her betrothed. Add magic, obsessed Fates, the ability to court women in dreams and compete for their love and you have some seriously interesting romances going on here. I will say that the romantic “competitions” were a little over the top and ridiculous for me but the girls finally figure it out and I lived for the relationships that did solidify. This isn’t just a story about romantic love though. This is a novel that focuses on the love of family in general. This book handle’s Paradise’s abandonment of her daughters, a father’s obsessive and abusive love, and the power of healing and forgiveness. It showcases the trust and endurance of a sibling relationship and how strong you grow with love and support in your life. The way these girls trust one another through the turmoil and chaos of this story is really beautiful and a much different story than the first, and even second novel. It’s only through trust that this novel works.
“I want to feel love in its every form. I used to be so scared of it, but now I think love is another type of magic. It makes everything brighter, it makes people who have it stronger, it breaks rules that aren’t supposed to exist, it’s infinitely valuable.”
Overall, this book was really fast paced and truly magical in its atmosphere. Again, I was swept away into this world. It wasn’t perfect but it was pretty darn close. I was both ready and not, to let go of these sisters. I was satisfied with the ending, but as stated prior, a lot of the back and forth romance was a lot. Then again, what’s an epic magical story without dramatic sweeping love stories?
